Wyclef Jean instructs that we can help our Haitian neighbors by texting YELE HAITI to 501-501. Your phone bill will be charged $5. Haiti always felt close to me, growing up in Flatbush. Our generosity as Americans in this time of crisis is crucial.
Update: Thanks to commenter Meepmeep09 for pointing me to this Kos diary that contains lots of practical information for how to assist the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

Hey Spencer,
First: thank you! For being an invaluable progressive voice, always delivering intelligence and quality.
I will no longer be reading your blog. That’s a huge loss for me. But I do no longer want to sponsor anything associated with Jane Hamsher in any way whatsoever.
It’s just one bridge to many.
Teaming up with Grover Norquist. A dangerous man for decades pushing the most reckless, irresponsible and extreme reaganesque tax agenda. The California breakdown is a sad monument to the Norquist legacy.
Going on FoxNews to bash the Obama administration.
Reducing this community to a megaphone for an endless stream of manufactured, baseless controversies – the latest one dropped into my mailbox just now. There’s apparently this “huge scandal” consisting of Jonathan Gruber having the gall having received government financed grants for his research, which I guess proves that he’s “bought and paid for” just as Jane’s email informs me.
Is it Glenn Beck, is it NewsMax, is it FireDogLake?
Elsewhere on this fine community one of your fellow high profile bloggers is promoting a tactical alliance on economic policy between FDLers and the teabagger crowd. Presumably because the mostest hardcorest progressives have more in common with mentally unbalanced libertarians and end of days evangelicals than with sellout incrementalist and realist progressives. What do they have in common? Why they hate Obama of course.
That’s why half the comments here these days are teabaggers. Some of them don’t even bother with pretending to be democrats anymore. The left-wing people still hanging around are to confused to tell the difference between progressive ideas and libertarian ones.
So this is where I get off. FDL has gone off the tracks. Way off. It’s not even on the ground anymore; it’s floating in space whacked out on acid chewing it’s fingers – cuz it’s so fucking rad seeing the little bastards break.
You’re to classy for this Spencer. Get off before it’s to late man.
Good call. Ive given mine today.
Btw, did you know that the US is infiltrated by muslims at all levels?

lol
For another means of contributing to Haiti relief, Chris Hayes of The Nation magazine recommends (via Twitter) Boston-based Partners in Health – their Donate page is here.
According to Charity Navigator, PIH is a pretty well run charity – their page on PIH is here.
Over at Daily Kos, DallasDoc has been compiling donation and contact information for the Haiti disaster.
too soon to give up on a very fine ship.keep an eye to see whether it gets back on course.
@Sherwood… A cogent argument based on the evidence that you cite. But you fail to distinguish between tactics and strategy. Jane’s way over the top sometimes, I agree, but she’s attacking a specific problem — as I interpret things. Political thinking in the US has been completely co-opted by the right, so that even a conservative solution to a populist problem seems like a kind of middle ground. In that situation, co-opting the right AND staking out a radical position at the same time is, frankly, kind of smart. Necessary. (Don’t give up so soon.)
