Chris Morris is comedy’s greatest living genius. (A very close second is his occasional collaborator Armando Iannucci.) If you consume mass media, you need to familiarize yourself with The Day Today, Morris’ early-90s parody of the nightly news. (Steve Coogan’s classic Alan Partridge character started out as TDT’s sportscaster.) He followed up TDT with Brass Eye, a somehow superior show parodying TV magazine shows like 60 Minutes or whatever its British equivalent is. Each episode of Brass Eye had a topic — “Decline,” “Drugs,” etc. — and actual newsmakers were interviewed without knowing they were going to be on a parody show. The technique, practiced years before Ali G, resulted in the infamous “Paedophilia” episode of Brass Eye, arguably the funniest and most offensive hour in the history of television. Phil Collins is interviewed seriously to support of a fake pedophilia advocacy group called fucking Nonce Sense. I can’t embed the fucking thing, but Chris Morris’ parody of Pulp is the Nagasaki of takedowns.
This week Morris screens his new project at Sundance: a fucking parody of radicalized Muslims who seek to become Holy Warriors. Just let that sink in. I have seen no footage fromt he film. But I can confidently predict it’ll be brilliant. It’s called Four Lions. I’ve long thought ridicule is an under-utilized counterterrorism tool. Morris ought to put this theory to the test. (For those worrying that the film might possibly be Islamophobic, read this Morris-penned takedown of Martin Amis. Which pains me, as Martin Amis is among my favorite novelists.)

British comedy writers really like to wait between new projects don’t they? I first heard that the premised was pitched as a six part series and then put away two years ago. Nathan Barley, his actual last writing xredit I believe, came out three years ago. How could you not mention jaammm though? It was wondershowzen but glacially slow. Genius. Also, this post should have been titled “this is the neeeewwwws.”
