Update: I wrote this hours ago. I’ll be on al-Jazeera tomorrow morning at 8, by the way. And it’s now 20 minutes before the SOTU, and I just want to note that at least Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is set to end this year. That’s at least some hope for audacity.
Update 2: Can’t forget my girl Megan Carpentier’s Jezebel liveblog. Is Bush still president or something? Air America refugees stand up!

Is it really audacious though? I mean yeah the people who are against ending it are really against ending it but ending it is rather popular isn’t it? Now getting it through the Senate will be a tough go but then what isn’t it?
I will never diminish any civil rights effort, particularly in a country where one of the major political parties repeatedly persecutes gays.
Thanks for this. Now, do you know what I need to download or whatever to get AMC’s liveblog to actually show up? All I get is a header, a masthead, and a big empty whitespace in the middle.
From Spencer: “I just want to note that at least Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is set to end this year.”
From the link:
Calling for a repeal is a far cry from “is set to end.” DADT is still in effect, and unless/until Congress repeals it, it is set to continue.
It’s more of a commitment than Obama has made since taking office, but it’s still just words. Nothing is “set” to change yet.
I’ll start cheering when I see Obama start twisting arms to get it passed.
Gates and Mullen testify on Tuesday. They will doubtlessly talk about DADT. Gates applauded the mention in Obama’s speech about repeal. All of these things are positive indicators.
Agreed.
But saying DADT is “set to end” is getting ahead of reality.
The carton of milk in my fridge is set to end on Jan 31. That’s going to happen — end of story. But DADT has no end date stamped on it — at least not yet. Obama may be making more definite statements about ending it, as may Gates and Mullen next Tuesday. These are steps that move in the direction of ending it, but there’s nothing carved in stone about it yet.
