I should also note that Frontline is advertising the show on this blog, but I have no idea if I’ll see any money from them, and frankly the documentary is so valuable I’d pay them to watch it.

Tomorrow night PBS’s Frontline is going to air a fascinating documentary about an Afghan journalist who embeds with the “central group” of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s Taliban/al-Qaeda-aligned Hezb-e-Islami in the north of Afghanistan. (I can’t seem to embed the preview clip, so here’s the show’s website.) I’m not really sure how much I can say about this under the terms of the show’s embargo, but I watched it over the weekend and was blown away by what I saw: it’s a rare opportunity to hear these men describe their goals in their own words; to see their actions as they unfold; and to get a glimpse of their tactics, strategy and execution. After the show airs — tomorrow night at 9 eastern — there’s a discussion worth having about civilian casualties and the persistance of NATO presence in the deteriorating north, but for now, check out the preview and set your DVR.

Did you ever post your thoughts about this episode? It seemed to demonstrate amazing levels of incompetence on the part of the central group. On the other hand, they certainly came across as unwilling to inflict collateral damage on Afghan civilians.
