No, I don’t mean the act of being professionally obligated to act in a less-than-trustworthy manner. You can read Janet Malcolm for the definitive perspective on that. I mean that I got a text from a non-journalist friend asking, “What is this srebrenica happened because there were [gay Dutch] soldiers bullshit?” And my first reaction was to feel professionally slighted. What, you didn’t read what I posted last night? I put up a statement from the Dutch ambassador to Washington! Tweeted it and everything and I know you follow me! What more do you want? What do you possibly expect me to tell you? Just read what I wrote!
Then it occurred to me that no reasonable person could possibly read that text as a request for information as opposed to a jovial/exasperated conversation starter.

Yeah, I totally didn’t get what was wrong with your response until that last sentence. FML.
Same…It seemed reasonable to me.
All the better to start such texts with “WTF is up W/…” to avoid any confusion in the future in the toneless mediums.
