My guestbloggers have been doing an admirable job of supplying the “real talk” promised in Spencer’s banner–but where the hell’s the punk rock? We’ve got a huge punk deficit here, but lucky for you there is at least one form of aggressive deficit reduction I can get behind.
I can’t match your regularly scheduled blogger’s punk credentials, but I’ve got a few albums sitting around that are hopefully new to you guys. So without further ado, here’s one of my recent favorites: Minneapolis band Off With Their Heads:

As a native Minneapolitan at NYU, and a lover of both cities, I think the music that comes out of Minneapolis is, on average, better because…well, I don’t know. Maybe it has something to do with the Mississippi River (i.e. St. Louis – Chuck Berry, Memphis and New Orleans…um…)? Even with the Hold Steady, as much as I love my fellow transplanted Minnesotans, Lifter Puller, Craig Finn’s Minneapolis band is even better.
NYU REPRESENT
Well, right now I’m a bit too enmeshed in my senior thesis to be particularly happy with the place, but any other time I’d share the sentiment.
Can’t answer your question, but totally agree with the premise. Dillinger Four is pretty easily my favorite current band, but OWTH has closed that gap, maybe because they’ve released more than one album in the past 5 freaking years.
Thanks to the magic of mp3 blogs, I’ve recently discovered the 80′s MN band Final Conflict, and holy shit that’s some good stuff.
Oh, Lifter Puller was about a thousand times better than Hold Steady.
