Adam Serwer is a little uncomfortable with President Obama’s ‘predator drones” joke at this weekend’s White House Correspondents Dinner:
So you have to wonder why in the world the president’s speech writers would think it was a good idea to throw a joke about predator drones into the president’s speech during the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, given that an estimated one-third of drone casualties, or between 289 and 378, have been civilians. It evinces a callous disregard for human life that is really inappropriate for a world leader, especially a president who is waging war against an enemy that deliberately targets civilians. It also helps undermine that outreach by making it look insincere. It’s already hard enough to convince Muslims that the U.S. isn’t indifferent to civilian casualties without having the president joke about it.
Other people have compared this to George W. Bush’s joke about missing weapons of mass destruction, but I think this is sort of irrelevant. The American people have really refused to cope with the human cost of using drone attacks against suspected terrorists because for the most part, as long as we feel “safe,” we’re indifferent to what the government does in the name of security. [Emphasis mine]
I think it’s a little more accurate to say that the American people have refused to cope with the human cost of our national security policies in general. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an American politician apologize for or acknowledge the massive amounts of violence and destruction we’ve unleashed in Iraq and Afghanistan. There isn’t a single official figure for the number of civilians killed by the war in Afghanistan since 2001, but the estimated total numbers in the tens of thousands. Likewise, there’s no single official figure for the number of civilians killed in the Iraq War. Current estimates put the civilian death toll at 100,000, but that’s almost certainly higher. We’ve unleashed a staggering amount of suffering over the last decade, and most Americans are — at best — only dimly aware of it.
I’m not sure why this is the case, given that Americans like to pride themselves on being more humanitarian than most. But it is clear that we have a habit of indifference towards the victims of our foreign policy. While we have admirably dedicated a lot of time to remembering the American costs of Vietnam, we hardly talk about the 2 million Vietnamese also killed during the war. And I’d be surprised if more than a handful of Americans know about the 250,000-plus Filipinos killed during our war with and occupation of the Philippines in the early 20th century. This is to say nothing of the thousands killed by the American-baked Contras in the 1980s, or the hundreds (possibly thousands) killed in our dubious invasion of Panama.
Simply put, when you consider our nation’s long-standing unwillingness to confront the costs of our policies, Obama’s “joke” isn’t really all that surprising. Like most Americans, Obama and his writers didn’t give any real thought to the real people affected by our actions. It’s depressing, sure, but it’s also very typical.

What kind of cognitive dissonance must this cause in the Obamabot crowd, especially at Daily Kos. I wonder if anyone posted this there.
Thanks. Obama let slip and show his real face. Like Bush and so many others, they cannot hide their aggressive side when humor is engaged. In their hubris, they don’t realize how inhuman they are.
totally tasteless. guess they haven’t learned anything.
Why are we surprised that this fuckin’ warmonger cracks predator jokes?
A Nobel Peace Recipient at that…! 8-(
I’m sure Alfred is spinning in his grave…!
geeze .. i hate to have to point it out .. but a callous disregard for human life.. among those who command it .and those who directly engage in it .. is one of the bitter fruits of sustained armed conflict .. otherwise one couldn’t survive it …
Just another example of the coarsening of the American people. Now it’s even acceptable and perhaps even fashionable for the Commander in Chief to make light of death and war. Obama’s a real riot but then of course Dims and the corporate media are enraptured.
I just went there but I couldn’t find anything about this. I did notice with some amusement that the Lake is on their blogroll. I guess that’s where the occasional Pod troll comes from.
the biggest reason why the american people are only dimly aware of the suffering our government has caused is because the mainstream media is focused elsewhere.
So O joked about drones. I’m not surprised, but every day he finds a way to drop to another low. His emotional response (dead) to anything is just as inappropriate in its own way as W’s was in its, and policies are just about the same.
obama da bum is a Callous pr**k,
The right number I remember was out of the first 700 kills, 15 high value targets were taken out, 685 extras were blown away but hey someone decided they were high value targets worthy of that kind of collateral damage and Rep. Rob Andrews ( South Jersey) didn’t dispute those numbers.
Arrogant asshole that he is.
I watched the clip that the WH put up on Youtube, and what struck me is that it’s not just Obama. It’s the whole Versailles on the Potomac thing that is just stomach churning.
A pox on all their houses.
Reading Samantha Power’s “A Problem From Hell” destroyed any notion for me of national-level American humanitarianism.
You know if each of you who are sooooo offended by the joke put a lump of coal in your butts, you’d all have diamonds by Friday.
Really? You found it offensive? Really? Jesus….
Shouldn’t you all be out freeing Mumia or something?
You mean Daily Blackwaterdog, a.k.a., Daily Kult?
No, haven’t seen such posting.
Heh, yeah, I’m a big fan of yours TBogg and really enjoyed the “limp of coal in your butts,” etc.
Good stuff.
As for being offended by Obama’s Predator Drone “jokes” well, I was, but only in that amusing “you’d all have diamonds by Friday” way.
Funny.
Did you find Bush searching for WMD under tables equally amusing? Sheesh.
the thing about TBOGG is there are times i can’t discern his terse wit from his wisdom..
No it’s not surprising. The US is a conqueror culture, where children are raised with the idea that war and militarism are positive values. Conquerors don’t apologize for their effect on their victims, they accept it as the necessary prerequisite to attaining their own ends.
I’m wasn’t offended by it. I said he was an asshole for saying it. Surely you get the difference, no?
TBogg, as one who reads daily of the carnage caused, and, faithfully blogs about it… I did ‘cringe’ when I heard the ‘punchline’…! 8-(
I would just love to sit on my ass and make a profit…! ;-)
Predators are like shooting a man in the back, except you also take out his whole family. There is no trial. There is no airing of the evidence. There is no public investigation afterward.
It is not a joke under any circumstances.
Note that James Jones had to eat crow over this mild bit of Jewish stereotyping:
http://www.examiner.com/x-19823-PostPartisan-Examiner~y2010m4d26-Video-Obama-National-Security-Advisor-Jim-Jones-apologizes-for-Jew-joke
But Obama jokes about extrajudicial assassinations–and nada.
And that was not his only off-color joke. He also joked about Dick Cheney torturing people. And he has done the same thing repeatedly in the past.
May the fleas of a million camels infest their groins. (apologies to Johnny Carson)
Why am I not surprised?
No
It evinces a callous disregard for human life that is really inappropriate for a world leader, especially a president who is waging war against an enemy that deliberately targets civilians.
Well, Obama was already showing a callous disregard for human life by putting a celebrity cocktail party as being more important than a huge natural disaster. Obama didn’t want to cancel on Jay Leno – who cares about the millions of barrels of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico as that interfered with Obama’s social plans.
I cannot stomach any of this hardy-har-har stuff with the President playing joker in chief since Bush. It’s part of the national sickness that this has become something to televise live each year. I specifically took pains to avoid seeing or hearing any of it this year.
It’s not the offense. It’s the total ignorant stupidity that this is supposed to be entertaining for ANYONE. Nobel Peace prize, my ass.
I am now officially done with Obama. It’s such an epic waste. We need better.
I am also done with anyone who isn’t actively anti-war, anti-torture, and anti-oligarchy. Done.
You are well named.
Well, by “offensive,” I usually mean intentional hurting. Whereas, by the term “asshole,” I mean a violation of my sense of what is proper or fitting from a particular person in a particular setting.
However, your mileage may vary
I think most of you people take yourselves very seriously and your Olympian diatribes are tiresome. I wonder if anyone in elected office could ever rise to your standards but wonder most why you are not in elected office to put things right.
You beat me to it. I can’t imagine why he didn’t send his regrets that the great problem in our Gulf was requiring his full attention. I guess that he couldn’t bear not to use all of the good stuff his writers had ginned up for him. Simply another example of how he is just bush iii.
What exactly were you expecting him to be doing on Saturday night about this?
And, that insensitive scoundrel FDR attended this very dinner during WWII!
They better.
Do you think for a New York minute that they won’t be or perhaps already are flying over US cities? Speaking of NY, one more smoking suv and they will be blowing away some joker and collaterals in Times Square.
How about act appropriately? It was very clear that night that this will be far worse than Katrina in its impact. Would you have supported Bush yucking it up a week after Katrina?
He’s looking at a full-fledged national fucking calamity. He would have done himself (and us) far more good if he canceled and went to the Gulf that night. That’s what a real leader would have done. Not hide behind BP’s apron.
The reference occurred in the very important context of dating relationships between kids who are 100% European-American and those who are not. Long term, that is the only sustainable solution to the legacy of legalized white supremacy in the U.S.
It is possible to note that, while at the same time maintaining a strident resistance to war, torture, and oligarchy.
For those interested in a callous disregard for human life, the Atlanta Bureau Chief of the Wall Street Journal won a Pulitzer in 2009 for Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black People in America from the Civil War to World War II
I just checked and not a single diary criticizing Dear Leader over at Daily Kult. I’m sure the non-American Black Water Dip will post a photo diary of Dear Leader soon.
FDR attended this event during WWII.
http://www.whca.net/1944.htm
blah blah blah, go torture some kids, huh? I know you Stalinist Obamabots get a kick out of things like that.
.
The fact that he would tell a joke like that when we’re actually killing civilians using drones as policy is beyond despicable and demonstrates his cluelessness and arrogance.
Thank you Jamelle, and thank you Adam Serwer.
I’m not personally invested in the reputation and public image of the President of the United States, as TBogg (judging by his uncalled-for hostility and stereotyping here) and oldgold (showing a more-repressed spitefulness) seem to be, so in my opinion you’re both absolutely right to publicly highlight and condemn Obama’s contemptible “jokes” Saturday night.
I’d much rather a president for whom some “jokes” are off-limits when it comes to currying personal political advantage – particularly when the subjects are deadly-serious topics like torture or our controversial ongoing “collateral”-damage-heavy drone attacks against a civilian Muslim population – than one for whom anything goes. We won’t get to that higher standard by shutting up and looking the other way, or winking, when confronted with the latter behavior.
This will linger for Obama, especially given the developing disaster in the Gulf when he was self-indulgently partying, and deserves to.
I wonder if he joked about B-17s?
I put up a item about this at Openleft and a commenter reminded me of Obama’s joke from last year.
“Leave it to Uigurs. I thought that was pretty good.” (Referring to those imprisoned in Gitmo.)
We’ll see what he comes up with for next year, maybe an indefinite detention joke, or a bit about ordering an summary execution. Whoo hoo. He’s gonna have Ed Henry the gang rollin in the aisles.
Was TBogg’s serious? Or was it snark?
I haven’t read him for years but I don’t recall him being an idiotic douche bag.
First, how would my “repressed spitefulness” compare to the post at #38?
Second, I took no issue with those who were critical of the “joke,” but disagreed with the contention that Obama should not have attended the dinner as a consequence of the Gulf Tragedy.
I understand that the Spice Boys are here tonight. Well, they’d better stay away from my daughters. I got a few words for them Predator Drones, Domestic Spying, Extraordinary Rendition, Black Ops, Military Tribunals, Stanley McChrystal…
I’m a laugh a fucking minute!
-Barry Hussein Obama
Especially since he is lying through his teeth about it. BP will NOT pay for this. And they CANNOT be left in charge of it. He is to the right of Arnold at this point, for christ’s sake.
1) why is this topic displaying as the “Don’t See Us” topic ??
2) i’ve been more amazed day by day at all the “why wasn’t obama on the gulf coast sooner” garbage .. it’s been a right wing meme and it surprises me to see it on a progressive site as well ..
i’ve said this elsewhere but i’ll repeat it here:
what do you expect the Feds to have done ?? Uncle Sam doesn’t have a fleet of skimmer boats ..or miles and miles of containment booms .. nor does Uncle Sam know how to fix broken pipes 5000 feet beneath the waves .. nor does Uncle Sam have the expertise to repair botched down-hole cementing jobs by halliburton ..it’s not a federal responsibility .. so pray tell what do you expect obama himself to have accomplished there …other than getting tarred by all that loose oil ??
what’s next .. that the POTUS is supposed to drop everything and run to assist with anyone with a painful hangnail ??
Being the inflicter brings on these yuk it ups.
Being the inflictees–when it’s you or your parents, children, lovers and friends–not so funny.
Americans have not seen real devastation here in North America since the American Civil War. We were no more merciful to ourselves or our land, villages or some American cities. Lots of Americans were killed during the Civil War under a regime of gruesome, horrid, hellish conditions.
Barack Obama seemed and appears shallow making this Predator joke. Predator jokes being in the realm of mocking the suffering and death they bring to many innocents. Killing Asians with Predators may seem humorous in some dark gallows arcade game fashion but it surely is deadly serious.
It is doubtful he would want his family treated like Americans have treated far too many civilian, often innocent human beings in Iraq,Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The quality of American demonstrated compassion and mercifulness? Hardly material for joking around about.
Barack Obama maybe needs to find better gag writers–or surely set the topical theme of his jokes with more care and awareness.
Death by Predator? Not funny.
FWIW, I think both the joke and attendance at the event are judgment calls, upon which reasonable folks can disagree. The fact that some who voted for Obama and believed in him find the joke in poor taste and his attendance questionable, given the circumstances, is at least worthy of both discussion and Obama’s attention.
Hangnail?
It sounded serious to me, and unfortunately in line with some rare comments TBogg’s left in other threads here (Coakley vs. Brown is where I first noticed it, I think) nastily defending the Democratic Washington establishment from frustrated commenters – who were venting their understandable criticisms of the Party – by belittling those commenters as a group.
First, I didn’t think it was a good joke.
Second, I did not claim Obama’s decision to go was unworthy of discussion.
Finally, how is it that my rather muted comments cause such a stir while the comment at #38 is given a pass?
My guess is that Obama’s “Kool Kat” routine really, really pissed some folks off, given the circumstances, and we took it out on you. I, for one, find the guy’s behavior — across the board — to be reprehensible. (And I voted for him.)
So, I guess I can muster somewhat of an apology. As long as you don’t compare BHO to FDR anymore.
Favorably, as more “repressed” than the spitefulness @ 38. barrycocaine lashed out in frustration, targeting and stereotyping you, the same way that TBogg stereotyped those on the other side of the argument @ 14.
I’m glad you got around to explicitly stating that, because it certainly wasn’t how I interpreted your first two one-sentence comments @ 25 and 28.
This is bullshit piling on of the president. The Predator Drone is a weapon that kills with stealth – it’s application far exceeds it’s current use, and to suggest that Obama meant to minimize the suffering of the Afghan people with this crack on the white bread Jonas boys is absurd – if he’d made the same reference to BP (they better clean it up or else…) or to numerous other targets (Boehner will never see it coming) – we’d be laughing at it – much like we did when Wanda Sykes wished heart failure on Rush Limbaugh. This carping is just another excuse to call Obama an asshole and war monger. It’s not legitimate policy conversation, it feeds right into the hands of the right wing, and it’s poor interpretation of the joke – an interpretation made by one looking for offense. This is not to defend either Obama’s war policy or the suffering caused by Predator Drones – though if you voted for him — like I did, then you should’ve known he promised to ramp up aggression in Afghanistan.
Maybe Tbogg can make some jokes about rape and starvation. I’m sure he has some good ones. We all need to “lighten up,” I guess.
The soldiers I’ve known have tended not to joke about using weapons, even though much else that they they’ve joked about has been in very poor taste even by my lax standards. It isn’t hard to understand why. So I agree that their commander in chief should not joke about the tools of war either.
That said, I have no more problem with Predator drones than I do with M-4 carbines, 81-mm mortars, or 1000-lb JDAM bombs. They are weapons. They kill people. The problem in Afghanistan is not with the weapons used but with the policies that deploy them.
It makes no difference to the family sitting in a mistargeted house whether their lives end when a drone launches a missile, a fighter drops a bomb, or a mortar team lobs a shell. The operative difference is the presence or absence of death-dealing ordinance in their living space.
The dishonesty, cowardice, and avarice that now pass for domestic politics drive careerist, politically-minded military officers. They create contradictory plans to please the politicians. They make unrealistic promises and demand that their subordinates act on the plans. The subordinates try to apply available experience, training, and weaponry that is altogether unsuited to the problem at hand. In the aftermath, the military machinery that is normally expected to correct for bad judgment, poor planning, faulty execution, and dereliction of duty–intelligence gathering, post-strike reconnaissance and analysis, demotion, reassignment, CID investigation, reprimand, and court martial–are stopped dead by the chain of command, lest they embarrass the careerists or their sponsors in Washington.
There are probably all sorts of ways in which a drone can be a more effective and even more moral weapon of war than a fighter jet, a B-52, or an artillery barrage. Trying to shoot guys that may or may not be in this or that civilian house is just not one of them. The fact that the drone is, nonetheless, the chosen tool thus says much about those doing the choosing and nothing at all about the weapon itself.

President Barack Obama brought down the house at the 2010 White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night with a series of jokes
Obama also made a crack at former presidential hopeful Senator John McCain. “Unfortunately John McCain couldn’t make it. He recently claimed that he had never identified himself as a maverick, and we all know what happens in Arizona when you don’t have an ID. … Adios amigos,” the president said, making a joke in reference to McCain’s home »
I would expect Obama to use some expected level of presidential judgement and say no to certain jokes. That’s all. A minimum level of judgement about what is in good/bad taste. Which would REASONABLY include not making fun of the murdurous use of the powers of the presidency. Especially when he now orders the assassination of American citizens with impunity.
I could agree to disagree about what he does with his Saturday nights, keeping morale up, honoring tradition, etc. But not joking about the tools of war, tools which may in themselves be illegal would seem to be a nice line to respect.
It would also be nice if he could have marshalled a bit more action on the Gulf Coast before going to the party.
What’s Obama going to do when the oil spilling heads up the east coast? Tell jokes about THAT? Just because his “writers” say so?
Think of the parade of cretins we have seen as White House writers? Noonan, Frum, Thiessen, … This is the level of intellect that is driving our national discourse. *spit*
Drones are NOT a topic for entertainment. Not ever.
americans are imperialists
they dont have a clue the suffering they do around the world.
do you think the germans and the japanese people cared about the people their military was harming.
visit iraq and afghan for a vacation see how that goes.
this country killed one million vietnamese in that war for profits.
90% of americans did not even know who the viet cong were.
americans are asleep to their imperialism.
even joke about it.
even while the country is going bankrupt over military costs.
20% of americans wanted to reduce military costs. 20%?
most will reduce education before military costs.
super power status is an american ego gone wild.
the texas mentality.shot first.
Ah!, but did FDR make jokes about the firebombing of Dresden or Tokyo?
Feel free to familiarize yourself with those horrors, then get back to us.
TBogg: You’re offended by those who were offended? And therefore criticizing them? How meta.
Grow.The.Fuck.Up.
Oh here go the holier than now Left. Was the joke in bad taste? Yes but our entire Foreign Policy is in Bad Taste. Foreign Policy is not dinner table conversion material because its hardly talked about in the MSM.
You can’t have a conversation about our Foreign Policy in America without being called a traitor or worst.
How come every time they wanna showcase an injured military personal its always somebody “White”???? When enrollment in the Military for Minorities in general is very high????
Doesn’t the left have BIGGER things to complain about then Radio Controlled Airplanes with missiles on them? Sure its a bad idea and I don’t support this type of military action, watch Gundam Wing there’s a movement for automated “Mobile Dolls” at the center of the series and how it will disconnect man from the cost of War.
That should concern you more than anything else, the Pentagon is reporting to Engadget, that these drones you hate so much will be using “Pilot-less Drones” soon…
Obama is the joke but just not funny.
Yes, there is a simple solution to the gulf oil spill–contain and control at the point of introduction.
That stupid leak is 145 gallons per minute. It could be captured and pumped at the source easily. Something bizarre is going on when they pretend they are as stupid as the public they exploit. They are purposely contaminating the gulf. It appears to be an act of terrorism or a black flag operation.
Meanwhile, their corporate front man distracts the sheople with cruel jokes about random murder.
Conrad C. Elledge
Jkat @ 48 made the comment about Obummer just getting tarred by all that oil. I would suggest that Obummer would feel quite at home in all that oil, since he’s nothing but a snake oil salesman!
It doesn’t even matter. The oil is natural, and the natural gulf waters will take care of the natural oil and clean it up by itself naturally. Rush told me so.
And for those who say it’s of no consequence, I say, if Obama’s judgement is this bad about jokes … no wonder we are in such trouble, and increasing by the day.
TAPPED? “So you have to wonder why in the world the president’s speech writers would think it was a good idea to throw a joke about predator drones into the president’s speech…”
No. *You* have to wonder why the detestable individual known as the POTUS decided to keep that line and utter it.
But no, *we* don’t have to wonder. This is a dishonest, arrogant man who is guilty of aiding, abetting, covering up torture and illegal war, and quite likely of continuing to facilitate torture, a proponent of “extraordinary” rendition, “indefinite” detention, “enhanced” interrogation, “extralegal” assassination, and JIT commissioning “comissions” to judge “war crimes” that are not war crimes under international and domestic law – much unlike the crimes he, his subordinates, and his predecessors committed and continue to commit.
What did you expect? Sparkling wit? Eloquence?
This man shamelessly plagiarised Che, MLK and the “Yes We Can” slogan of Latin American migrant workers to sell his fraud to an electorate that was becoming vaguely aware of having been ripped off for three decades, while being financed by the ‘stablishment to bail out their unsustainable exploitation one more time.
No, the only question I have is whether the Daily Show writers thought this was for the show, or whether they were smart enough to set Obama up. Because the other possiblities would be too depressing.
As for that peculiar cognitive blindness that is so hard to explain:
Population 1939 Military Civ Death Total Percentage
US: 131,028,000 416,800 1,700 418,500 0.32
Japan: 71,380,000 2,120,000 580,000 2,700,000 3.78
Total and Precentage of servicemen killed:
US Army+AAF 318,274 2.8
US Navy 62,614 1.5
US Marine Corps 24,511 3.66
Japanese Army 1,526,000 24.22
Japanese Navy 414,900 19.76
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties
With the caveat that this does not separate out Japanese casualties from Non-US forces or US casualties outside the Pacific Theater – the latter should more than compensate for the former – it seems that The American Way Of War and its emphasis on “strategic” death from above and force protection at all cost racks up impressively one-sided casualty counts – and that that asymmetry is required and desired by a voting population that is perfectly willing to see excessive enemy casualties if that is the price for reducing US casualties. Personally, I see no difficulties understanding the cognitive defects here.
“The American people have really refused to cope with the human cost of using drone attacks…”
That is one peculiar definition of coping. Why, it almost sounds like we are the victims here!
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/cope
But I am sure, if we struggle hard enough we can overcome anything that would keep us from continuing our despicable conduct and get another million killed in no time.
