Not the sort of press release I expected to receive from Afghanistan, but it appears today is Go Skateboarding Day, “an international holiday recognizing the value of skateboarding to youth in societies around the world.” Rad! In Kabul from 2 to 11 p.m. — so the tail end of it should be going on when you read this — the Kids will skate from the Mekroyan fountain to an indoor skatepark completed last year by Ghazi stadium. Inside the park, the youthful shredders will Skype with likeminded skaters in Basel, Switzerland.

I’ve never been a skater myself. But I know how important skating has been to friends of mine and it’s great to see that someone’s looking to pass that on to the youth of Afghanistan. Now and forever, skateboarding is not a crime.

We come to shred

We come to shred

You know what? Let me try to find out how we could support Skateistan. I know you’ve got some old decks and trucks and whatever you people call your Skating Apparat. It’s time for some Unity.
