Kind of a goofy piece here about Gen. McChrystal’s post-military career by Seth Fiegerman that quotes my pal Michael Noonan from Philly’s Foreign Policy Research Institute. This, however, is inspired:
Batman
In all the fuss about the Rolling Stone article, you may have missed the line in the piece where the writer brilliantly describes McChrystal as being “gaunt and lean, not unlike an older version of Christian Bale in Rescue Dawn.” Well, General, take that as a compliment. Perhaps you could star in the movie remake of The Dark Knight Returns, the comic about Batman fighting in his older years. Just a thought, sir.
I want to see those batarangs with four stars on them.
Seriously: I was talking this weekend — with Noah Shachtman, no less — about the opportunity Christopher Nolan is missing by not basing the third film in his Batman Rebooted franchise around Dark Knight Returns. If you’ve never read it: Frank Miller reimagines an elderly Bruce Wayne, broken emotionally by his retirement from crimefighting, returning as Batman to indulge his narcissistic, sociopathic power fantasies. It’s one of the greatest comics in history, and Batman’s martyrlike parting of ways with Commissioner Gordon at the end of The Dark Knight sets up a movie version perfectly. Alas, while Nolan’s third Batman film may be titled The Dark Knight Returns, it appears not to be based on Miller’s classic story. So as long as I’m daydreaming, someone’s got to make this movie while Clint Eastwood is still a working actor, but Stanley McChrystal wouldn’t be a bad choice either.

IIRC, an actual telling of The Dark Night would require appearances from Superman and Crazy-Reagan. The rights for the former could probably be cleared, but the latter is reserved for shamelessly hagiographical works.
Truth be told, I want a live action Nolan-y reinterp of “Batman Beyond,” which in itself was skewed off of TDKR. Beyond is way under-rated, but deals with so many of the issues of old!Bruce that I looooooove it and how f’ed up it was. That would be a most excellent future-reset of the Nolanverse.
