If ever you want to see an effort at stripping American identity from American Muslims, this ad denouncing the Ground Zero Mosque is a perfect case in point. In its conflation of Muslims with al-Qaeda, it’s everything Usama bin Laden ever hoped for. The basic critique that the addled conspiracy theorists of al-Qaeda have proffered, in which they are the vanguard of Islamic interests and the measurement of Islamic fidelity, is on display here. I’m surprised it didn’t contain the
as-Sahab watermark.
I’m an American Jew, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. Build the Ground Zero Mosque. For more — and for why — read this Adam Serwer post.
Update, 1:47 p.m.: Greg Sargent’s network buddy thinks this ad is an fundraising generator fueled by manufactured outrage.
We should be able to protect the feelings of those who suffered because of the 9/11 attacks and to allow American Moslems to practice their faith without one stomping on the other. The WTC center is seen by most people as having been destroyed by Muslims, so it makes sense to protect that area and to keep a mosque at some distance.
Why would any Muslim want their mosque at that site anyway? Have they no sense of the hatred some people feel toward them? Have they no sympathy for the feelings of people who still hurt?

“Why would any Muslim want their mosque at that site anyway?”
Because they live there. There are 600000 Muslims in New York. They are part of the fucking city. That’s the point Spencer is trying to make.
Jesus Christ! (Whoops!) “The WTC Center [sic] is seen by most people as having been destroyed by Muslims…”
Am I not part of “most people”? Who the f••k are you to speak for me? I tend to think that the WTC was destroyed by terrorists. I was in Uganda when it went down, as a matter of fact, working with a bunch of Muslims and Christians who were pretty much equally fucking appalled at what we are all watching on the TV.
I also think that Guantanamo was designed by Bush people. Not Republicans. Not Christians. Not Americans. Same with the myth of WMD in Iraq. ((You’re lucky I let you off the hook.)
Don’t be so small-minded, it just doesn’t serve you well. Who are you really to inquire at such a great distance as to why any group, including Mosque-building New Yorkers, want to build their what-it-is wherever-they-want?
Have you ever thought that for the Muslims that want their mosque near ground zero it may be considered a sign of respect towards the victims and their families?
Because the Ground Zero neighborhood is a terrible place to build cross-cultural understanding between Muslims and the West, the stated goal of the group behind the mosque. Obviously.
It is really insensitive, though, ’cause bigots like you across the country take the lessons of 9/11 and the lingering pain of the atrocity SO MUCH MORE SERIOUSLY than the people who actually live there and approve of the plan.
I’m going to stop typing or break my keyboard now.
