L’Shana Tova to you, Senator Joe Lieberman:
“I appeal to people who are planning to burn the Quran to reconsider and drop their plans because they are inconsistent with American values and, as General Petraeus has warned, threatening to America’s military.
“We are at war against violent Islamist extremism, as propagated by al Qaeda, its ideological affiliates, and radicalized individuals, who justify their wanton violence based on a corrupted interpretation of Islam. Let us concentrate on working with the moderate Muslim majority to defeat the Islamist extremist minority in Afghanistan, and wherever else it may establish sanctuary, and to discredit this violent ideology that propagates the hateful lie that the Islamic world and the Western World are engaged in a clash of civilizations. We will never defeat this brutally repressive enemy by discarding America’s historic respect for religious diversity.”
Very well said, sir. Let’s leave this awful summer of Islamophobia behind in 5770.
Also, Mayor Bloomberg: I respect what you’re saying completely. But no one’s saying that the Florida congregation is outside its rights to burn the Koran. As far as I’m aware, no one has ever said the planned burning is outside the boundaries of the First Amendment. This debate is entirely about the pastor’s judgment; the strategic consequences of anti-Muslim bigotry; and the implications for a country founded on religious tolerance to abridge its ancient compact.

I have been surfing the intrawebs on this, and the one point nobody seems to make is that this will be n open insult to the hundreds of thousands muslims fighting alongside the US in Afghan and Iraq. All those ANA, all those terps, all those awakening folks who killed AQ for you: Thats the guys the islamophobes are insulting.
Thats a point in the mosque debate as well. (But hey, they are just auxillary troops, its not like they die for REAL…)
Can you imagine what would happen if a Bible was burned in some Middle Eastern country? There wouldn’t be enough clean underwear in the world to control the hysteria of the Psychochristian-Americans.
But burning a Koran? Why, that’s not even close to being the same thing. No sir. Nuh-uh.
Or maybe they’re just wishing and hoping – maybe even begging? – that some outraged American Muslim armed with a little something from Wal-Mart stops by to provide some “Second Amendment remedies” for their old-fashioned desecration?
Now won’t that just be a hoot?
Do you have a link to his statement?
It’s so sad to me that this debate has now been framed, by such diverse voices as TMCP and Olbermann, as ‘endangering our troops abroad,’ when it should have, all along, been about the fundamental human indecency of burning another person’s holy book.
I care for our troops’ safety as well, but must every argument to reach the crazy right wing now be cast as affecting their safety? Can’t we simply, in America, say, ‘this is un-American and you must stop.’?
Talk about crying “Fire” in a crowded theatre.
Excellent, excellent point. I remember thinking the same thing when Michelle Malkin freaked out on Rachael Ray for wearing that keffiyeh-looking scarf: Whaddaya think the SOI wear?
But which argument is more persuasive? From their perspective?
What’s more offensive to muslims, burning korans or bombing and invading their countries?
Don’t be duped by anti-Koran burners Joe Lieberman or Spencer Ackerman. Both men backed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Remember Gaza. Joe Lieberman cheered every death from American made and paid for armaments utilized by the Israelis.
Ackerman and Lieberman believe in killing muslims, book burning is a side-show.
Spence: Wich makes me remember another point to all you mililtary focused bloggers: Why isnt there one freaking interview with one freaking ANA guy anywhere? Why doesnt the ANA get medals on prime tv? Why is the focus on the terrorists always, and never on the other regular guys?
