It seems like Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen is talking past WikiLeaks with this argument:
“What I don’t think those who are in charge of Wikileaks understand is we live in a world where just a little bitty piece of information can be added to a network of information and really open up an understanding that just wasn’t there before,” Mullen told CNN. “I would hope that those who are responsible for this would, at some point in time, think about the responsibility that they have for lives that they’re exposing and the potential that’s there and stop leaking this information.”
To the contrary: WikiLeaks shows every sign of understanding we live in that world — probably better than most governments understand it. Remember what leaker PFC Bradley Manning told grey hat hacker and journo Adrian Lamo, as reported by my Wired colleagues Kevin Poulsen and Kim Zetter:
“Everywhere there’s a U.S. post, there’s a diplomatic scandal that will be revealed,” Manning wrote. “It’s open diplomacy. World-wide anarchy in CSV format. It’s Climategate with a global scope, and breathtaking depth. It’s beautiful, and horrifying.”
Manning described himself to Lamo as a “source, not a volunteer” for WikiLeaks, but it seems fair to say they share a certain view of the transformative potential of transparency. (To put it as neutrally as I can.) Why would Mullen’s argument compel WikiLeaks to cancel its document dump?

I agree… this is pure ‘what if we gave a war, and nobody came.’ anti-war demonstrating! Go for it WIKILEAKS! Remember GOVT’s any communication is now OPEN communication… so don’t say sneaky things! Wll it make diplomacy and war more difficult. You betcha! So dig in there and solve problems openly for a change.
That’s one of the funniest thing I’ve ever read from the USG, in the sense that it SOOOO reveals the U.S. incompetence. If a little bitty piece of info is sooo impt, and the U.S. spends $80 billion on the spook biz (don’t know if that also includes NSA & DIA, or only CIA), how come the U.S. knows NOTHING?
It is certainly a strange statement by mullen. he seems to be saying that the people who read the information are now getting a real understanding of what is going on in terms of US foreign relations and war, but that is bad for the people that carry out the secret, and often, contradictory actions. What goes on in secret is usually totally opposed to what is said in public.
Basically they have an idea of what they WANT to hear and so keep bribing and water boarding until they hear what they want. Getting people to tell lies is expensive and hard work.
This kid Manning may be getting scandals mixed up. Climategate would be one of the Kochtupus tentacles. The real scandal is the attack on scientists by Polluters such as Petey Peterson whose Nalco made Corexit. And the climate does have a global scope.
Judging from the quantity of the documents that Wikileaks has, there have to be many sources supplying them. It also seems that it should be very hard for so many documents to have been leaked without some knowledge by some who had the power to stop it and expose the leakers. This seems to be another persecute the low level person who opened the gate that others, more senior, walked through. Support of this pointless war seems to be so far down that those involved are trying to stop it.
Only in this world, not the whole planet.
Also, I read one story that leaders of small Taliban factions that pledge to give up their arms are killed by our night raiders within about a year at the most. IOW, if you try to stop fighting, it does you no good, in fact, it leaves you helpless.
I’m guessing that these documents are about past communications, not future strategies. They will be embarrassing but they will not endanger any troops on the ground.
The last time I checked, embarrassing the President and world leaders is not a threat to ‘national security.’ And they already manage to embarrass themselves every day anyway.
With all the money and lives wasted in Iraq, and the continued mismanagement of the somewhat justifiable military action in Afghanistan, maybe these documents will ‘embarrass’ Obama and Congress to actually do the right thing.
Now that I think of it, embarrassing these leaders is probably our only hope. Otherwise we’ll get more of the same tainted, corrupt crap from Democrats and Republicans and other ‘world leaders.’
The initial scandal is that these documents could be so easily leaked.
If it was Manning, he was low ranking and used CDs, absolutely shocking lack of security.
Check this out…they are spying on the head of the UN, one reason to find out what plans there are to investigate torture in Iraq, etc.:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/nov/28/us-embassy-cables-spying-un
The entire UN, including the top 3 floors, is totally wired for sound.
They (Hillary etal) want iris scans, DNA, fingerprints, faxes, email passwords, etc., and spying on the UN is illegal period.
Illegal – that’s the NSA’s specialty. They just launched a sig-int satellite with an antenna the size of 2 football fields…they aren’t at all concerned about the rulz of law.
What I want to know is, what are the Mormons going to do to save the constitution? I heard they have a prophesy that they do, so it seems to me that now would be a good time for it.
The UN should relocate out of the US. This should be the final straw. It probably wont happen but i would love to see it.
Yeah sure, Harry the effin’ Reid is working on it.
They are Terminally Embarrassed (TE). It can kill their careers. Of course its a threat.
Embarrassing to the president and sneaky congressional leaders is the definition of national security. Most of the stuff that’s classified is information that if it became known to the average American would cause riots almost everywhere.
I don’t know if this wiki dump contains unredacted names of people who could be in world of trouble as a result of this disclosure. I know previous dumps have contained them. As a result, I have to withold my otherwise whole hearted support for Wiki Leaks. Which I am very sorry to have to do. (And that is the case whether the names disclosed were of good guys, bad guys or so-so guys. I am just not into playing executioner.)
Who specifically was harmed (other than the leaker that is) by the previous wiki leaks dumps. please.
Wikileaks removes the names before it releases the data … or at least most of the names.
Before Fallon was forced to resign he said there were several of them trying to put the crazies back in the box.
Mullen doesn’t seem to be a liar. He said last year that the situation in Afghanistan was deteriorating.
Is he one of the sane ones that Fallon included in his statement?
In my humble opinion, Perhaps Mullen knows it’s time to leave the the Middle East and East Asia.
Why did the state dept. refuse to discuss redactions with Assange?
I’ve been reading the wikileaks documents today, and it’s most curious that Al Jazeera is not reporting jack squat. Abbas’s Son and Azjerbijan President’s 11 year old son both own houses on the Dubai Islands.
The Saudi King Abdul bin Aziz asked the US to strike Iran, Egypt’s Mubarak hates everyone! The Shi’ites in Iran, Al-Maliki in Iraq, the leaders in Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood in his own country, Qatar – and he’s taking payoff money and military funding to prop up his little tin pot dictatorship where he treats his people like dogs. It’s these Traitors in the Arab world, and the shunning of Turkey for inclusion in the EU (based on being Islamic) and the US funding the PKK against them and the constant drumbeat against Iran for the last decade.
Oh, and the investigation into the assassination of Harirri Sr. by the US and Israel in which they arrived at the predetermined conclusion that Hezballah did it, was concocted to test Harriri Jr.’s willingness to align with US against Hezbollah – and in return he’ll get weapons from us.
Time for Israel to get their nutty settlers out of the West Bank and for us to get out of the Muslim world. Obama should not let this crisis go to waste. It’s a great opportunity. Netanyahu never intended to make peace, you should read the first cable after the Cast lead. He’s an unstable mess.
