The least we owe to the gay men and women in our military who protect us. Today’s vote is the beginning of your long, long, long overdue recognition. On behalf of a grateful nation, we extend this to you, the same as we extend it to everyone serving in the military alongside you. Thank you for your service.
On a personal note, to all my friends in the military and Department of Defense civilian ranks who’ve written me over the past few weeks — and years – to vent about DADT: may the end of this discriminatory policy offer you a sense of the peace you have long fought to protect.
Special note of recognition to Joe Lieberman here. Repeal would never have happened without him.

Long road ahead, let’s not get ahead of ourselves and congratulate our friends and workmates who serve in the military in the closet. Lots of processes, procedures, certifications, letters to Congress still to come before open service is actually permitted.
