Fight Fire With Fire

Via Glenn, Tom Friedman wrote a column for the al-Qaeda Weekly that accidentally made its way into the New York Times:
In Gaza, I still can’t tell if Israel is trying to eradicate Hamas or trying to “educate” Hamas, by inflicting a heavy death toll on Hamas militants and heavy pain on the Gaza population. If it is out to destroy Hamas, casualties will be horrific and the aftermath could be Somalia-like chaos. If it is out to educate Hamas, Israel may have achieved its aims.
Can we not agree that inflicting "heavy pain" on a civilian population is not a legitimate aspect of warmaking? It’s also kind of funny that Friedman thinks Israel won the Lebanon war in 2006. Can someone please tell the Israelis that? It might make them calm down a bit over Gaza.
